What is Osteoporosis

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis actually derives in the term "porous bones." When you've got osteoporosis, your bones become weak and brittle. These porous bones can be so brittle that a mild bang or stress like bending over could cause a fracture. An important reason for this weakness within the bone structure has insufficient calcium, phosphorus or other minerals within the bones.

When someone suffers from osteoporosis, it is usually only a matter of time before they fracture a bone. Common areas for these fractures to happen include the spine, hip or wrist. We often consider osteoporosis to be an affliction of ladies but an unexpected variety of men also suffer.

But hope are at hand. There are many things it's possible to do to both prevent home loan business bone thickness as well as enhance the condition and health of one's bones.

Osteoporosis Symptoms

One challenge with osteoporosis, along with a possible reason why so many people suffer from this affliction, is the fact that there is no pain in the early stages. As your bones deteriorate and become brittle, you could be totally unaware. But when the bones weaken so much that you've got osteoporosis these symptoms become common:

  • Stooped posture

  • Getting shorter or loosing height

  • Fractures - especially from the wrists, hips, vertebrae along with other bones

  • Back pain which is often especially severe once you fracture a vertebra or possess a collapsed vertebra

Osteoporosis Risk Factors

Many factors may influence the prospect of you developing osteoporosis. Such as:

Your gender. Women are nearly doubly likely as men to fracture bones as a result of osteoporosis. One reason is that women generally have lower bone mass than men generally. Another reason is always that women outlive men. Another factor will be the sudden drop in estrogen at menopause that can accelerate bone loss. Girls that are thin or have small frames are particularly at an increased risk. Likewise, men who have low levels of testosterone also are generally at the upper chances. The start of osteoporosis in males is normally after age 75.

Race. If you are Caucasian or Southeast Asian, you've got a greater odds of developing osteoporosis. Blacks and Hispanics have a somewhat lower risk.

Family history. Genetics matters a whole lot and that we realize that osteoporosis tends to run in families.

Frame size. In case you are very thin, or use a small body stature, you will have higher likelihood of developing osteoporosis. It is because you have small bones in the first place and as they loose mass with age, there is less left.

SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Both women and men who use SSRIs show lower bone mineral density. SSRIs are normal in antidepressants. However, the research is not conclusive on why this is the case. Doctors don't recommend stopping taking SSRIs as a result of anxiety about bone loss.

Use of medications containing corticosteroid. Certain medications designed to use corticosteroid may be damaging to bone. These medications are often prescribed for such common conditions as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis or even asthma. People who will need to take steroid medications must have their bone strength and density monitored and perhaps take other medications instead, in order to prevent bone loss.

Thyroid hormone. Bone loss may also be brought on by excessive thyroid hormone. An over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or excess quantities of thyroid hormone medication to deal with an under active thyroid are normal explanations why you might have greater than average experience of thyroid hormone.

Other drugs. The cancer treatment drug methotrexate, the blood-thinning drug heparin, some anti-seizure medications, aluminum containing antacids and diuretics can also cause porous bones and bone mass loss.  We will talk extensively about antacids in later chapters.

Lifetime experience of estrogen. A lady using a higher lifetime experience of estrogen may have less likelihood of osteoporosis. For example, ladies who possess a later menopause or began menstruating earlier are in lower risk. A female who has a lower experience of estrogen (from more infrequent menstrual periods or menopause before age 45) will often develop osteoporosis earlier.

Smoking. If you utilize tobacco, you also have a higher probability of developing osteoporosis, though it isn't entirely clear why this is actually the case.

But there's desire to relieve osteoporosis and osteopenia!

This does not always mean it is all bad. Through proper nutrition, eating and working out you can reverse and rebuild lost bone mass and regain your health and vitality. My book, Freedom from Osteoporosis and Osteopenia explains, inside a step-by-step fashion the way to naturally relieve the trauma and pain of weakening of bones.
